Mug Shot and Requiem for My Mock Orange

Here's a picture you've just got to love:

Here WAS my mock orange, in full bloom this spring:

And here is my mock orange now:

He didn't mean to do it. The backhoe got away with him. It even ran over his leg. He was willing to pay for it. What price? I paid maybe $20 for it. Now its replacement value is maybe $200 for a 25 ft mock orange. Can't be done. He was contrite, limping, will haul off the remains. Maybe it'll sprout from the roots. I've got cuttings I'll try to root. If I'm successful I'll put the extras in the fall MG sale.

  • Mr Darcy is too cute, with two frisbees. But your poor tree! (Shrub?) What was he attemping to do when he did that? Who is he? I'd say we'd bring shovels, but he offered to pay, so that's something, but it won't bring back your beautiful mock orange.

  • He shouldn't have been on my property at all. He was supposed to be back filling the BIG WALL the next door neighbor is having built on her back property line. The place needing backfilling is a shovel job, too close for equipment. I think he got off his front end loader to survey what to do when it lurched into gear. Else why did it run over his foot and bang him in the ribs?

Oh! Darcy taught himself to pick up the 2 frizbees. I'd never have thought to teach him that. Like I've said, he changes the rules when he gets bored.

  • Mr. D is too cute. And clever! But your poor tree. Is there any chance that it might come back? Oh, I know it won't be the same, but an established plant might send out new shoots. Might be worth waiting to see.

  • It took 10+ years after planting for it to flower. I found a volunteer nearby. But it'll probably take 10+ years for it, my cuttings, or the roots to grow into another flowering plant.

    Bah! Humbug!

  • I got confused in there and I thought Mr. Darcy was using the backhoe.

That poor shrub- it was so beautiful......And the operator in question could have really been hurt....by you for messing with your plants!
