Sewing And Crochet Furniture
We've been talking about where to store knitting and crochet yarn and other such stuff. I thought you all might like to see what I use.
My crochet chest closed. It was MIL's. So that means it's an antique. The 3 bottom drawers hold yarn and crochet and knitting books. Notice the top surface, the crease in the middle left to right. The top drawer? Well, ...
Surprise! The upper drawer isn't a drawer at all. The chest is actually a secretary/chest. The "drawer front" lifts up and folds; the writing surface pulls out; and there's a little drawer and a 4 little shelves. Then, push the writing surface back in, and pull down the cover that is folded up on the top, and it looks like a 4-drawer chest again.
And this is my sewing desk. DH made a pair of them and a bunch of matching modular cabinets for the DDs when they were kids. When the DDs grew up and left home, I used the cabinets for all sorts of things, such as the desk I'm using right now to type on. So 4 drawers and 2 shelves behind the door. To the left out of sight are several doorless bookcases that are the same height so as to form a continuous row of shelves.

I love the old chest! I love the way furniture used to be made so compact, to serve a purpose without wasting space.
And I envy your sewing table. As I'm just getting started, I'm using my old computer desk, with a large piece of board across a 2 drawer cabinet for pinning and cutting. The height is ideal but the surface should be bigger and sturdier. Well, if I get more into this maybe I'll invest in something.

Oooh. I want a chest like that. All the stuff DM had. There was no secretary or roll top desk. Sigh. And that's what I want.
