Overview of The Great American Math Help Yourself Book
Purpose: I've helped many adults with math. I've come to realize that entirely too many adults are afraid of math. What if I wrote a book that was part novel, part math to make some of the everyday concepts fairly easy to understand and helped reduce math anxiety?
Some obstacles: Graphics! Lots of concepts are easier to follow with pictures. The first chapter written is one that would occur fairly late in the book. But it doesn't need graphics. So it was written first.
Audience: I envisage this as a slim book, auxilliary to a math textbook for an adult wanting to go back to school, but having a deficit in math. This person would have signed up for a remedial math class. Maybe there are other people this would appeal to.
Trepidations: Can I do it? Not sure.

We talked about this a little bit at lunch, but I think it could also be aimed at high school students who are having difficulty with math.
I really do like the idea.

YA! That was meant to indicate the genre, not just an exclamation. ;+)

Show me where I'm wrong. Really. If this is used in a public school system, there may be hoops I can't go through. I'm guessing a cast of 1000's decide on books. Yeah, I know. Just ask how it's done.
If this is a private read, then either the student or his parents buy it. A student wouldn't do such a geeky thing, IMHO. A student wouldn't read anything his parent bought him, IMHO.
Really. Show me how I'm wrong.

gp: I like this idea, and the tone you use. I do think adults would be your best audience simply because of the way school systems handle the question of text books.
If you have the resources, I would think about graphics other than charts, as well.
And finally, I'm wondering if the setup might work against you. The retro sister and brother thing might get old pretty fast. I'd at least take a stab at varying the charaacters.
